President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Mr. Kwesi Nyantekyi has revealed how he nearly lost his legs during his hay days as a footballer.

Speaking to www.newghana.com.gh Mr. Nyantekyi said, “I don’t know if I’ve ever told you that I used to be a footballer growing up. I was of the best midfielders in Wa but I had to quit playing football because a quack doctor nearly finished off my legs.”

“I sustained an injury one day whilst playing football and there was no specialist around to see to my injury, but there was this man who has made himself a medical doctor so I was taken to the man and only God saved my legs,” he said.

Mr. Nyantekyi, guest speaker at the passing out of the second batch of the trained masseurs, held at the Korle-bu teaching hospital, Accra, on Thursday also reckon the need for local clubs to add to their bench a professional masseur to help in the management of acute traumatic soft tissue injuries.

“Although football serves as a source of entertainment, business and good health, injuries ranging from minor contusions/bruises to catastrophic injuries and sudden deaths have also been recorded in the game. The need therefore to strengthen the medical wing of our technical directorate.”

According to the FA President as part of the association’s effort to satisfy club licensing requirements, Premier League clubs will have to engage the services of professional masseurs to sit on their bench.
