Structural defects at the 40,000-seater capacity Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in Accra is becoming a death trap to patrons of the facility, Starrfmonline.com’s investigation can confirm.

A looming disaster awaits the nation if managers of the facility do not take immediate steps to address the architectural challenges that have saddled the national stadium which received a facelift in 2007 ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) hosted by Ghana in 2008.

A visit to the facility revealed that metals used in erecting sections of the stands including the stretch towards Osu are corroding as managers look on helpless.

The situation is not any different from the playing pitch as the green grass is giving way to the unfavourable weather with no record of when they were last watered to enhance any growth.

The latest discovery comes in the wake of the indebtedness of the Accra Sports Stadium and the National Sports Authority to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to the tune of GH¢ 240,000 ($60,000) for the past 15 months putting the edifice and its offices in total darkness.

The accrued debt covers a period of 15 months without a penny paid by the Stadium authorities.

Private workers and official occupants of the edifice who have offices within the stadium have complained of unfavourable working conditions due to the absence of lights.

But the estate manager of the NSA, Eric Nkansah Gyamenah, said efforts to raise funds internally to settle the debt have hit a snag.

“From 2014 till now we owe over GHC 240,000 and the Electricity Company is demanding that at least half of the amount is paid for the light to be restored,” he toldStarr Sports.
