Birmingham City boss manager Gary Rowett has explained why the Blues offered Ghanaian starlet Koby Arthur a new deal at the club.

The 19-year-old inked a fresh two-year-contract to keep him at the St Andrew’s Stadium until 2017.

Birmingham were close to losing the attacking midfielder, who was limited to U21 actions last season, but managed to get him to sign a new deal at the club.

Manager Rowett has explained the reason for his contract extension.

We’re trying to build a ground of under 21 players with real potential. Previously the U21s have been an extension of the U18 but for me the 21s almost have to be a feeder group for the first team,” he told BBC WM’s Steve Hermon.
