Theophilus Nii Armah made history in South Africa for Ghana when he led the Black Sharks to record their first international victory during the Power Horse Beach Soccer Tournament in Durban.
Armah who is founder and Technical Director of Teshie Beach Soccer Club in Accra said the tournament in South Africa was an eye opener as it was his first international experience as a beach soccer coach.
According to him Ghana has the potential and image in sports to become a big force in beach soccer.
“You know Ghana has a big name in football and the exploits of the Black Stars with big names like Andre Ayew, Asamoah Gyan, Kwadwo Asamoah and others like Sulley Muntari and Michael Essien makes Ghana a feared side. We did our best, but it was not enough. We have learnt a lot and we hope to polish the rough edges and go for win win win in our next games” he said.
Theo Armah who is a broadcaster with Obonu FM under the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation hinted that it is not easy combining the media work and coaching beach soccer.
He holds a FIFA certificate in beach soccer and feels proud with that achievement in addition to his award as best beach soccer coach two seasons ago I the local league organized by the Ghana Beach Soccer Association (GBSA).
Armah believes Ghana can shine in beach soccer if the players are exposed to bigger tournaments, and named Aziz Cofie, Innocent Kumesa, Goalie Danil Gokah, Michael Sema Alex Adjei Fred Kwevi and Michael Lamptey as rising stars in the game.
At the Horse Power sponsored event, Nigeria beat Ghana 5-2 before the lost to Mozambique 2-1 in a tight game and then thrashed Seychelles 8-2 in an interesting encounter where the Black Sharks took four goals lead in the first half.
Armah commended the GBSA executive led by Yaw Ampofo Ankrah for his boldness in ensuring that Ghana participated in the tournament.
He urged clubs who are not coming to the beach to return because there is a bright future for beach soccer.
