Sports News Tour de France: Vincenzo Nibali unflustered after losing yellow
JUL 14, 2014 LISTEN

Astana's Nibali finished Sunday's ninth stage seven minutes 46 seconds behind winner Tony Martin (Omega Pharma-Quick Step), and 5:01 off new race leader Gallopin (Lotto-Belisol).

The Italian was not too fussed at having to skip the presentations for the jersey holders, and said winner Martin (12:15 behind Gallopin) and Pierre Rolland (+4:07) were Nibali's only concerns heading into Monday's 10th stage.

"The team worked hard all day after everyone seemed to want to go in the break," said Nibali, who is 1:34 behind Gallopin.

"We knew that today was a day for breaks. Nobody helped us with the chasing and so we worked all day. Tony Gallopin took the jersey but it's not worth losing sleep about. Now tomorrow (Monday) it won't be up to us to work and we'll see what happens.

"Today was really hard and we got through it OK. I think Pierre Rolland was the only real GC contender to gain time and perhaps we could say Tony Martin too but tomorrow's stage is tough, a real mountain finish."

Nibali said his team - including Michele Scarponi, Tanel Kangert, Lieuwe Westra and Jakob Fuglsang - will recover after spending plenty of energy on Sunday's 170-kilometre journey from Gerardmer to Mulhouse.

"I spoke to Michele, and the other riders did a lot of work, so they're tired but we'll see what happens. I've lost the jersey but I'll have some extra time to rest up for tomorrow. We'll be ready," Nibali said.

Monday's stage sees the peloton head from Mulhouse to La Planche des Belles Filles, covering 161.5km.
