Canada were consigned to a fifth quarter-final defeat in a row at the hands of Finland in Minsk courtesy of a late Iiro Pakarinen winner.

Juuso Hietanen rose to the occasion with a goal and an assist, while Olli Palola was also on target and Jori Lehtera laid on all three goals in a 3-2 victory.

Canada have won gold in the last two Olympic Games, but goals from Kyle Turris and Mark Scheifele were in vain as they crashed out in the last eight of the world championships yet again.

Finland can look forward to a clash with Czech Republic in the semi-finals after the latter beat the USA 4-3.

The Czechs struck three times in a second-period power-play to ensure USA captain Justin Abdelkader paid the price for a major penalty for charging Vladimir Sobotka.

Tyler Johnson scored twice in 13 seconds to set up a tense finale, but the USA could not muster an equaliser.

Russia will face defending champions Sweden in the semi-finals after beating France 3-0.

Yevgeni Malkin, Artyom Anisimov and Alexander Kutuzov were on target to see the Russians through.

Sweden were made to work harder for their place in the last four, as it was left to Mattias Ekholm to secure a 3-2 win against Belarus in the third period.

Both semi-finals take place at Minsk Arena on Saturday.
