Paralympics Sports is growing in Ghana - Bishop Adja Cofie

Accra, Aug. 16, GNA – Bishop Cornelius Adja Cofie, President of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) has said Paralympic Sports has over the years seen significant progress in Ghana as the nation will participate in three sporting disciplines at the Paralympic Games in London, later this month.

He said for the first time, Ghana will be participating in three disciplines in the 2012 Paralympics Games in London adding that it is an indication of a significant progress in terms of participation in the event.

Speaking to the GNA Sports, Bishop Adja Cofie, said Ghana will vie for honours in Paracycling, Para-Athletics and Powerlifting, and described it as a massive improvement in Ghana's participation in the competition over the years.

“In previous events, we participated in only Athletics, but now we have progressed beyond that. It is an indication that we have made a significant progress in terms of participation in the Paralympics Games,” He stated.

According to Bishop Adja Cofie, Ghana has over the years won a lot of medals at international events in Paralympic Sports and pledged to contribute to the image of the nation at the international scene.

He however noted that, the committee will continue to develop measures to improve Paralympics Sports across the country.

Bishop Adja Cofie also noted that, his outfit has enjoyed a strong support from authorities to improve the sport and was convinced that Paralympic Sports will continue to enjoy the needed support to progress.

Ghana, it will be recalled won four medals at the last All Africa Games in Maputo Mozambique through disabled athletes, Ajara Mohamed, Patrick Obeng and Anita Fordjour.

Ghana will be represented by 2010 Commonwealth Games Bronze medalist Anita Fodjour in the 100, 200 and 400 meters, with Botsyo Nkegbe competing in the 100 meters, whilst Alem Mumuni and Charles Narh Teye will seek for honours in Paracycling and Powerlifting respectively.
