Kumasi, May 17, GNA – William Nartey of H.M. Cycling Club on Thursday proved his mettle by strategically outpacing the riders and 'brokeaway' from the 66 riders to place first at the third stage of the 2012 Cowbell Cycling Tour of Ghana, from Assin Fosu to Kumasi.

The determined rider who was stripped off the Yellow Jersey he won at the second stage atoned for his mishap by breaking away from the group of riders to make a record of 2:43:28 over a distance of 140-kilometres, three clear minutes ahead of his contenders.

Samuel Anim of the Young Stars Club won the Green Jersey for the Best by Point of the stage as well as the Red Jersey for the Best Fighter whilst Victor Cudjoe of All Stars Club showed consistency by winning the White Jersey for the youngest cyclist, with the Blue Jersey going to H.M. Club as the Best Team.

Shaaban Mohamed, Technical Director of the Ghana Cycling Federation (GCF) praised Nartey for his consistency in amassing points, which he noted as an indication of his capabilities so far.

He observed that there has been much improvement in the performance of the cyclists compared to last year, whilst commending the team officials for the training regime and discipline.

The GCF Technical Director said the Kumasi metropolis is privileged to host three stages and called for the cooperation from the general public and motorists to make the Tour incident free.

Meanwhile, a random anti-doping exercise was conducted on 20 selected cyclists, the first ever in the history of the sport in the country, with all testing negative.

The fourth stage of the tour continues on Friday from Kumasi and Sunyani, a distance of 120-kilometres.

The Cowbell Tour of Ghana is being organized by the Ghana Cycling Federation with support from Promasidor Ghana Limited, Ministry of Youth and Sports, National Sports Authority (NSA), Bic, TV3, Multimedia Group, Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the Ghana Police Service.
