Andy Murray has slipped to fifth in the world rankings – and is now set to miss out on a top-four seeding for the Australian Open.
The British star opted to play in the Hopman Cup last week, winning all three singles matches, but the event did not carry any ATP ranking points.
Soderling did play on the ATP World Tour and his victory in Brisbane saw him leapfrog Murray into fourth place in the ranking list – equalling his career-high.
Murray is now set to be seeded fifth when the seedings for the first Grand Slam tournament of the season are announced later this week.
That means he could be forced to play Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal – the world's top three – in back-to-back matches in Melbourne.
Although that would be a tough run, Murray was also seeded fifth last year and on that occasion beat Nadal in the last eight en route to the final, where he lost to Federer.
