Contrary to the public outcry that greets the announcements of the expulsion of key performers in every team, specifically football, that of Sulley Muntari seems to have rather gone down well with the public.
The Black Stars manager, Milovan Rajevac, has announced his 23-man squad for the 2010 Nations Cup competition, and one the conspicuous names omitted, was that of Sulley.
Indications are that the Inter Milan midfielder, after taking a French leave together with other two Black Stars players, Michael Essien and Asamoah Gyan, has failed to render an apology and pay the fine as punishment.
And, to make matters worse, several attempts by Coach Milo to woo him back to the Stars fold, has proven unsuccessful. Reports have it that the player failed to meet with Coach Milo when the latter visited Italy for a “Truce mission.”
His expulsion has also demonstrated that Milo has big “balls” after all, and should serve as a deterrent to both present and future generations.
In as much as he is a good player, Sulley should bear in mind that he is not indispensable, and like the game of soccer, while playing, others would be warming up to take up your place.
I think Ghana has accommodated his nonsense for far too long (Since 2004 prior to the Olympic Games in Athens), through the Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka era to date.
And it is high time the nation closed the national door permanently to such players.
Living legends like Abedi Ayew Pele, Azumah Nelson, Rev Osei Kofi, Ibrahim Sunday, among others are highly revered, due to their high sense of duty to national assignments.
In our days, even playing for one's school team was a great source of pride, let alone play for a whole nation. Ironically, what the Osei Kofis, CK Gyanfis and others earned by way of remuneration, cannot be compared to the hard currency the current generation take as winning bonuses and per diem.
Yet, some have grown strong wings, and think the nation cannot do without them (No Muntari, no Black Stars). I have reservations regarding Milo's men for the Angola championship though, but those the coach has invited should prove some of us wrong, to book permanent places in the team.
Muntari should remember that the profession he has chosen - football - and discipline are bed fellows, and the earlier he puts his house in order, the better it will be for himself.
Most sportsmen who esteem discipline go far, a word to Sulley…
