Ghana Broadcasting Corporation has pledged to give full coverage to the Queens Baton Relay 2010 which will be held in New Delhi, India. The Director General of GBC, Mr. Ampem Darko said this when the Executives of the Federation of Commonwealth Games paid a courtesy call on the management of the corporation in Accra.
The Queens of England Baton Relay started in 1958 in Cardiff Wales and it's held every four years with the aim of promoting unity among all commonwealth states. Unfortunately, Africa has never hosted any since its commencement.
The relay traditionally begins at Buckingham Palace in London and travels to member states of the commonwealth before it finally arrives in the host country for the opening ceremony. The final relay runner hands the baton back to Queen Elizabeth II.
The baton arrived from Gambia and will travel to Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Seychelles and other African member states.
The Federation's presence at GBC was to present the baton to management of the corporation.
The regional Vice President Mr. Abdoulie M. Touray commended GBC for receiving the baton.
The Director General of GBC, Mr. William Ampem Darko said since GBC is the only station with nationwide coverage, the corporation will promote the games to the fullest.
