Samartex, Wise Win

Samartex kept their hope of playing in the elite division of football in the country on course when they beat Norchip 1-0 at the Carl Reindof Park in Dansoman yesterday.

The only goal came in the first half through Odai Quaye who, for the most part of the half showed signs of increasing the tally, but was always checked by the resolute defence of Norchip.

There was very little to choose between the two teams until referee Azizah brought the first half to an end.

Norchip looked the more purposeful side when the game resumed, with the team controlling the midfield and relying on long balls, but the defence of Samartex contained their style of play.

By the 55th minute, Samartex had had their back pinned to the wall, with Norchip showing signs of fetching the equaliser, but their attackers' finishing always lacked direction.

Not even clear chances that came their way in the penalty box by the first 10 minutes of the second half could be utilised.

Their wasteful tendency upfront prompted coach Prince Acheampong to beef up the attacking machinery by introducing Abubakari Swalla to partner Ampiah Ekow, and this changed the face of their attack slightly but their numerous attempts at goal could not beat Ampiah Ekow in post for Samartex.

Samartex, on the other hand, sat back to defend their solitary lead but occasionally threatened the opponents' goal area through counter attacks but could not find the back of the net.

Coach Tony Mensah of Samartex who appeared content with the solitary lead, decided to defend the goal by drawing more men back until referee Azizah brought proceedings to an end.

• A late strike by Thomas Yeboah enabled Saint Mirren to split the points with former premier side, Power F/C, as the two sides drew 1-1 in their Middle League encounter at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium yesterday.

Power took the lead in the first half when striker Andrew Ayiku scored on the 27th minute much against the run of play and held on to the lead till the 87th minute.

• In Tema Sekondi Eleven Wise notched a 1-0 win over West Ham.
