Support Assemblies Development Programmes – Odoom

Mr Abraham Dwuma Odoom, Deputy Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Environment has called on Ghanaians to support initiatives of district assemblies designed to improve their standard of living.

He made the call when addressing the press at Obuasi in the Ashanti Region after inspecting two market sites within Obuasi Municipality following a relocation exercise by the assembly.

The assembly had relocated some traders including plantain, cassava, palm nuts, mango and second-hand clothing sellers to the Obuasi Horsey Park to undertake renovation works on the pavement.

With the exercise, the Ministry had received series of calls from Obuasi indicating that the assembly had forcibly evicted the traders and resulting in chaos within the municipality.

Mr Odoom said Ghanaians needed change but did not want to sacrifice to effect the change, therefore, those who initiated programmes for the change incurred the wrath of the people.

Mr Odoom debunked allegations of misdeed by the assembly and urged the people in Obuasi to support the assembly in its development programmes.

The Deputy Minister commended management of AngloGold Ashanti for collaborating with the assembly to control the incidence of malaria within the municipality. "We are particularly interested in the Obuasi Malaria Control Programme and I hope that you will achieve the set target," he added.

Mr Odoom encouraged the assembly to institute programmes that would enable it to source funds from private enterprises to develop the municipality.
