Apam (C/R), Nov. 3, GNA - An armed robbery suspect in the cells of the Apam Police Station, last Monday night attempted to cut his penis with a mosquito coil stand.
Sule Amidu, a 42 year-old watchman at the Gomoa District Directorate of Education, speaking to GNA at the Apam Catholic Hospital said he was arrested on suspicion.
The armed robbery took place at the residence of Mr Francis Nutakor, Gomoa District Director of Agriculture about two months ago. The wife of Mr Nutakor was shot in the breast during the robbery and is receiving treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching hospital, in Accra. Amidu told the GNA that he decided to end his life by cutting his pennies because the Police had disgraced him and could not withstand the stigma.
According to him the Police picked him on the allegation that the armed robbers mentioned the name of one Sule when they were retreating. He said he was not the only person by name Sule, adding that, he had been in the Police cells for six days and all attempts by his employers to bail him proved futile.
When the Police was contacted, the Apam District Commander Assistant Superintendent of Police Kwasi Asare Baffour said investigations led to his arrest.
ASP Baffour said he was arraigned before a Magistrate Court but was remanded to reappear last Tuesday Nov. One, adding that, the suspect, however, cut his penis in the night of October 31. He said when Amidu could no longer bear the pain from his action, he started screaming and he was found lying in pool of blood when the cell was opened and rushed to the Hospital.
Amidu whose penis has been stitched, is under Police guard at the hospital.
