52 drivers arrested for traffic offences at Kasoa

Kasoa (C/R), Sept. 27, GNA - The Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Kasoa Police arrested 52 drivers for traffic offences within a week in a special operation to help reduce accidents. The offences included, over speeding, overloading, driving with defective lights, worn-out tyres, careless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to renew driving licenses, Insurance cover and failure to obtain road worthy certificates.

Assistant Superintendent of Police, Michael Roland Nyaaba, Kasoa District Commander of the MTTU speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Kasoa on Monday said the drivers would appear before court soon. He said since the operation begun about two weeks ago, drivers had been cautious on the road to reduce accidents. The MTTU Commander said between January and June this year, 78 accidents occurred in the area that resulted in the death of 23 people and 100 received injuries.

He said the rate was higher than what occurred within the same period in 2004 but did not give statistics.

ASP Nyaaba expressed optimism that with the education and strict enforcement of traffic regulations road accidents would reduce. However, he expressed concern about the absence of parking spaces along the main road at Kasoa, that compelled drivers to park indiscriminately to create congestion.

Mr. Nyaaba appealed to the Government to assist resolve any impasse that had delayed work on the rehabilitation of the road to ensure early completion of the project.

Some MTTU personnel appealed to the Inspector General of Police to provide them with gloves to enable them stop the practice of using polythene bags on their hands to handle accident victims and corpse.
