Tamale Regional Hospital to be upgraded

Tamale, March 3, GNA- The Northern Regional Coordinating Council is collaborating with the Ghana Health Service, to pool resources to upgrade the Tamale Regional Hospital into a Teaching Hospital to facilitate the training of medical doctors from the University for Development Studies (UDS).

Alhaji Boniface Abubakar Saddique, Northern Regional Minister announced this in a speech read on his behalf, during the inauguration of the UDS Medical Students' Association in Tamale.

Medical students from the university are currently pursuing their medical programmes at the Komfo Anokye and Korle-Bu Teaching Hospitals. The Regional Minister noted that for Ghana to be able to provide quality healthcare delivery, education of health professionals must be intensified and given all the attention it deserves.

He said: "It is for this reason that government has taken human resource development as one of its priority areas to create a new outlook for human capital to advance the national economy". Dr Roland Otchemah of the UDS, who chaired the function, announced that government spent more than three billion cedis annually to train medical students in Kumasi and Accra.

Mr Valetine Ahwuepwa, President of the Association said if Tamale Hospital was upgraded more students would be encourage to pursue medical programmes at the university.
