In view of the up coming Global Handwashing Day, which falls on the 15th October, the Miss Tourism Ghana Queen with her two Princesses Ms. Geraldine Atta Sappor, Maya Opoku and Daniella Akorfa Awuma, have initiated an ongoing handwashing awareness and demonstration in parts of Tema. The team led by the Coordinator, Robert T.K Amiteye visited the Community 7 /Nr.2, Basic, and Nurul Huda Islamic Schools. They engaged the pupils and teachers on the need to maintaining good personal hygiene with much focus on proper handwashing.

The theme for this year's awareness course is ‘Make Handwashing a Habit’ and it is a global advocacy day dedicated to increase awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.

It is in the light of this call that the Miss Tourism Ghana Organisation in collaboration with the Abibiman Foundation are engaging sections of society to increase awareness on the need for keeping our hands clean in order to prevent sicknesses such as cholera and typhoid.

The pupils and teachers of the various schools were elated to be involved in a participatory engagement. They used the veronica bucket facility and a sensor operated liquid soap dispenser and were taught the six step hand-hygiene techniques.

They were provided liquid soaps and all had a chance to show what had been demonstrated. The pupils who answered some questions were given t-shirts. The Tourism ambassadors adviced them to make regular handwashing with soap and under clean running water a habit for better health and prosperity. Miss Abigail Osei Kankam, a National Service personnel expressed appreciation on behalf of the Islamic school which has no toilet facility.

At the Tema Community 9 Market where they were warmly received by the market women and their leaders, the message was simple, 'that as the day for global handwashing approaches we should remember to teach our children at home to wash their hands regularly and at all times because we do not want the germs that settle on our hands to contaminate our food and drinking water.
