BRT buses on test yet to be insured

The buses being used for test operations of the Rapid Bus Transit service s  are yet to be registered and insured.

This is according to Roland Bruce, Marketing and Communications Manager of the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive, operators of the service.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, Mr. Bruce said the buses will be insured and registered at the end of the week.

Nine RBT buses have been deployed to ply to the Amasaman – Achimota – Circle – Tudu route to serve hundreds of commuters for free from today (Monday) to Friday, as part of test operations of the service.

But Citi FM has observed that most of the buses on test are unregistered.

Roland Bruce said, “We have started the insurance and registration; but these are the buses we are rolling as a test, but there are also majority of the buses so we are in the process of insuring them and hopefully by the end of the week, as we are done with the test run, all the buses should be insured and also registered.”

He admitted that, although the situation may result in a complication in the case of accidents, they were hopeful no such event will occur.

RBT service expansion
The newly introduced bus service is expected to be expanded to other parts of Accra to help commute passengers faster and more conveniently. The bus will soon be operational on the Accra – Legon – Madina – Adenta stretch.

Special lanes on some of Ghana's major roads are being created to serve only the RBT buses to guarantee rapid transportation.

Some commercial bus drivers within Accra metropolis, had threatened a strike earlier this month, to protest against the introduction of the RBT service which they say is likely to take away their source of livelihood.

But Roland Bruce described the protests as unnecessary.

According to him, managers of the project are collaborating with the various transport unions to complement their transport services in Accra.
