Mafi-Srekpe to be provided potable water

Mafi-Srekpe, Jan. 31, GNA - Mafi-Srekpe in the North-Tongu District is to be provided with potable water to help raise living standards in the area.

Currently the people depend on water from ponds, creeks and streams, which are also used by cattle.

Mr Nicholas Ahiadorme, North-Tongu District Chief Executive (DCE) announced this at a development rally organised by the Chiefs and people of the area on Saturday at Mafi-Srekpe.

He said the Assembly would also vigorously tackle the bad roads to make it easier for food producers to reach the marketing points. The DCE noted that road construction in the area was expensive because of the many creeks which required conduits.

Mr Ahiadorme said priority would be given to communities, which demonstrated local initiative for development in the distribution of limited Assembly resources.

He called for cooperation with the School Management Boards and teachers to salvage the falling standards of education in the area. Mr Vincent Azumah, Assembly Member said the area could be cut out off from Akatsi to the south and Adidome, the district capital, if the roads were not tackled before the raining season.

He said the poor performance in schools was due to the lack of teachers, nurseries and kindergartens and stated that "children under the ages of four who cannot walk long distances end up on the farms with their mothers".

The DCE said low-tension poles were to be purchased under the development programme for the distribution of electricity in the area and the building of school structures.

An appeal for funds yielded 5 million cedis.
