The Ministry of Health will today [Monday] release 1.6 million Ghana cedis to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital to prevent a total shutdown of the facility.

This follows an exclusive report by Citi News a week ago that the hospital was turning away new patients due to the lack of funds and huge debts owed their suppliers.

Speaking to Citi News, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Health, Tony Goodman said adequate measures have been instituted to ensure that the hospital functions properly.

“On Thursday the Minister went there [Psychiatric hospital] and revealed that the Ministry of Health is making sure to release 1.6 million into their account. They have started working on it so I believe by Monday they should have their money.”

Last Wednesday, the hospital suspended admissions at the facility due to lack of funds to support its operations.

The Communications Director for the hospital, Emmanuel Febiri earlier stated that the lack of government funding is adversely affecting healthcare delivery at the facility.

“Our source of funding depends on the subvention from the government of Ghana and the government has been trying to do its part but for some time now, the money is not forthcoming” he said.

“It has been challenging to manage the patients in terms of feeding them, buying detergents and even money to pay casual workers. As it stands now, there's no money, there's no food for the patients” he added.
