Immediate past National Organizer of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Yaw Boateng Gyan has stated that the sentence of the ‘Montie trio’ to four (4) months imprisonment was ‘too harsh.’

The NDC stalwart speaking with Kwabena Obeng Akrofi on Ark FM today said comments made by the contemnors was derisive but the apex court should have been a bit ‘flexible’ in their judgment after they apologized.

Mr. Yaw Boateng Gyan asserted that many people have made pillorying comments against the President and other state officials without being punished. He was however quick to add that such cases cannot be linked as contempt but “a lay person may mistaken it as contemptuous.”

He cited similar instance whereby Former Secretary of NPP, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie (Sir John) was only fined for making contemptuous comments against some judges of the Supreme Court during the hearing of the 2012 election petition.

“Sir John’s comment during the hearing of the 2012 election petition is almost in line with what Alistair Nelson and Godwin Ako Gunn said…but he was just fined. People will accuse the court for being partial if we do not speak on this matter.”

The former NDC National Organizer queried whether “our judiciary is turning political”. He wondered why some media outlets are not punished for doing same as what happened at Montie Fm.

He further advised Ghanaians to be careful with their utterances as the country gears up for the 2016 general elections.
