The Electoral Commission (EC) has admonished the media to support its work by educating the electorate on their role during elections.

Speaking at the launch of a code of a code of conduct for media practitioners launched by the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), the Chairperson for the Commission, Charlotte Osei, said its work would be meaningless if the electorates do not know their rights and responsibilities.

She further highlighted the importance of the role the media played in the education of the electorate.

“We all know that, delivering a credible electoral outcome is not only the responsibility of the Electoral Commission. It is indeed the collective responsibility of all Ghanaians, especially the media.”

Mrs. Osei noted that “the Commission's plans for organizing successful elections will not materialize if the voting public lack information they need to make informed choices.”

“While the Commission is doing all it can to drive enthusiasm among the public to visit their polling stations, it is important for the media to support the Commission's efforts by dedicating more airtime to encourage registered voters to participate in the exercise,” she stated.

The EC Chair's comments come as the Commission has revealed it has so far re-registered only 14,801 one out of the 56,000 people whose names it recently deleted from the Voters' Register.
