General News Ashaiman: Residents angry over deteriorating 2-month old road
JUL 25, 2016 LISTEN

The Presiding Member for the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, BB Abdulai, has questioned the way road contracts are awarded in the municipality. According to him, it is sad that newly constructed roads deteriorate very fast in Ashaiman unlike other areas.

Speaking in an interview with Citi News about the development, the presiding member said he had to personally at some point question the Assembly about the caliber of contractors selected to execute road projects in the area.

“I remember personally I had to question a contractor over some shoddy work being undertaken on the Ashaiman traffic light to the Valco flat road, because few hours after the road was given, a bituminous surfacing, the latrite started showing.”

He added that “the response I got was that, this is just the first coat and that the second coat will come later, but till date, nothing has since been done and the road which was tarred less than three months, has gone really bad and this is a total waste to the tax payer’s money.”

In Ashaiman, majority of the roads awarded on contract in recent months, only last for up to six months, with almost everyone questioning the calibre of contractors chosen to undertake such projects in the Municipality.

“Even pot hole patching is worse, they patch today and in three days they are off and this has been the continuous trend in the area and it has to stop” he noted

The Ashaiman new town to Afariwaa road, which was constructed about two months ago, has developed potholes.

When Citi News contacted the Municipal Chief Executive, Ibrahim Baidoo over the shoddy work a month ago, he said the contractor would soon returnto site to apply the second coat, but that is yet to happen.

However, some residents are calling for investigations into all road contracts that have been awarded in the Ashaiman Municipality, due to the poor road works in the area.
