National Health Insurance Authority officials registering some head porters

The Pamela Bridgewater Project has in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) registered 200 head porters (kayayei) in Accra onto the national health insurance scheme to make it easier for the kayayei to access health care.

The Deputy Chief Executive of the NHIA in-charge of Administration, Mr Edward Nunoo, in an interview said the free registration is part of their corporate social responsibility of registering the disadvantaged in society onto the NHIS.

He said this is to make access to medical care available to them when they fall sick and he called on the public to show compassion to kayayeis and be helpful in protecting the vulnerable hardworking girls.

The Project Director of the Pamela Bridgewater Project, Mr Yahaya Alhassan, thanked the NHIA for their support and show of love to the head porters.

He said that the Bridgewater Project stands for disadvantaged girls and children and the destitute in the country.

Mr Alhassan revealed that the Bridgewater Project would commission a vocational centre at Abenase, Mamobi in Accra in November of this year to equip the disadvantaged girls with sewing skills to make them economically viable.

The Pamela Bridgewater Project provides future and welfare to head porters popularly referred to as kayayei through education, protection, advocacy and research.
