Northern SHSs still closed over feeding grants

The fate of students of second cycle institutions in the Northern Region, still hangs in the balance, because it is unclear when they will return to the classroom, after serving the compulsory one week mid-term holidays.

Their absence in school according to education authorities, created space for the just ended Basic Education Certificate Examination, (BECE).

But Citi News earlier established that government's failure to reimburse the outstanding feeding grants for three terms, compelled heads of second cycle institutions in the Northern Region, to send the students home till further notice.

The BECE is over and yet the students are idling home waiting for their school authorities' radio announcement.

A student of Vitting Senior High School, Saani Faiza lamented that, “We are home because there is no food and that we should stay at home until we hear radio or television announcement.”

Mumuni Najima of Kalpohin Senior High said, “They gave us BECE mid-terms and before they gave us the mid-terms, our assistant headmaster of academics told us that they don't know when we will return to school because there is no food for us.”

“As we are sitting in the house, we don't have the habit of learning, but if you are in the school you will learn. We have not yet fully covered the syllabus, but the southern part they are still schooling and we are all going the write the same WASSCE that is why we are worried,” another student lamented.

At Dagbon State Senior High School in Yendi, Osman Sadia, shared her frustration saying, “They said they are giving us mid-terms for those who are writing the BECE and now the BECE is over, but we are still in the house because they said there is no food.”

“It is affecting us because we have not yet covered the syllabus and next year we are writing our WASSCE; so we don't know whether if we go back, the syllabus that they did not treat, they will be able to treat it or not, and as we are going back, we are going to write our terminal exams,” she disclosed.
