MAY 26, 2016 LISTEN

A lot of vigilance is needed to avert trouble in the upcoming November polls, Executive Director of think tank Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), Dr Emmanuel Akwetey has warned.

“All the areas where things will be done to undermine the credibility of the [electoral] process and its outcome, we must be vigilant and go there and speak,” Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IGEG) Dr Emmanuel Akwetey has said.

Ahead of the November 7 polls, the IDEG Boss has asked the Electoral Commission (EC) to institute measures to boost public confidence in the electoral process.

The EC has to take “steps to boost confidence in the institution and its management”, Dr Akwetey said, adding that though the institution is “doing well, according to the law…it must also take certain measures to boost public confidence,” he emphasised.

Dr Akwetey further stated that political parties and their leaders will need to sign a peace pact, which will ensure that they all accept the outcome of the elections. Before the 2012 elections, the parties signed a similar pact.

“The political leaders must denounce violence and sign a peace pact. They will accept the results, but if they, do all of us are obliged to ensure that the elections are very transparent,” he told journalists.
