Saturday 30th April, 2016 will go down in history for Ghana when Rebecca Asamoah was crowned the first 'Miss Africa Continent'. Asamoah was runner up in the 2015 Miss Ghana competition. The 24-year-old dental hygienist beat 11 finalists drawn from an original list of 40 contestants from across the continent in the inaugural pageant at Johannesburg's Gold Reef City casino on Saturday night.

Youth Without Borders Ghana sends out warm congratulations to Rebecca Asamoah for wining this maiden competition and making mother Ghana proud. This is with particular emphasis on using the competition to promote the Ghanaian culture by wearing Ghana-made material like braids, traditional Ashanti gold-coloured beaded crown and Kente cloth.

We also applaud this maiden competition put together by the South African film producer Neo Mashishi with the aim to empower young African women and using the competition to sell Africa to the world as proud Africans and by doing everything the African way without emulating any content from other global competitions.

Youth Without Borders Ghana welcomes comments of the Ghanaian who in an interview said "there are a lot of things to be fixed in Africa -- water, education, environmental issues,”. "My main concern is the empowerment of youths... so we can work hand in hand and put our continent in the best place it should be."

The competition engaged the 12 finalists in a series of pre-pageant activities meant to promote African culture, including showing off their culinary skills in cooking traditional meals from their native countries.

It is welcoming news that the organisers of the pageant hopes to involve the African Union so the competition can be used to champion the development of the continent of Africa. This we believe will also help the winners of the competition spearhead campaigns to champion some of Africa's developmental issues including health, education, poverty, integration and promotion of African culture.

Youth Without Borders believes such platforms can be harnessed effectively to accelerate development across Ghana and the continent of Africa. We wish Rebacca well and hope she uses this opportunity to sell Ghana and Africa to the rest of the world whiles championing issues of development.
