Strikes kill society - Moderator

Accra, April 30, GNA - The Right Reverend Dr Setorwu Ofori, Moderator of the Global Evangelical Church, has appealed to workers to stop or at least minimise strike actions in order to promote national development.

The Moderator said strikes had the potential to kill society and asked the congregation to imagine a day that everybody ceased to work; no vehicles on the road, hospitals, schools and all institutions closed down.

'Media has also stopped working, no food vendors and worst still, at home, no one seems to be doing anything, including your good self! What do you think would be the effect?' he asked.

The Moderator made the appeal during the Inauguration, Induction and Thanksgiving Service for the Tema Presbytery, the newest presbytery for the Global Evangelical Church.

He said according to the Theology of Work, workers must see themselves as co-creators of God whose activities brought continuity and sustenance to society.

'Remember that whatever genuine work that you do, you are co-creator with God; but when you fail to work and you go on strike for instance, you are killing society,' he said.

The Right Rev. Dr. Ofori advised the newly elected executives to see their induction into office as a call to faithful service and stewardship and become the voice of the voiceless in society.

Rev. Samuel Oyete Attu, the Presbytery Chairman, on behalf of his colleagues, expressed gratitude to the Synod of the Church as well as the entire membership for the confidence reposed in them and the opportunity to serve.

He said the Presbytery was developing a strategic plan to guide in the areas of church growth, evangelism and strategic church planning.

'The acquisition of land for a permanent administrative office, accommodation for the chairman, as well as the establishment of sound administrative machinery with the required staff would also be contained in that plan,' he said.

The executives of the newly carved Tema Presbytery, who were sworn into office, are Rev. Samuel Oyete Attu, Chairman, Rev. Micheal Akiti, Clerk, Mr Frank Obuour, Treasurer, Mr Daniel Deynu, Synod Committee Member, Madam Augusta Gbate, Synod Committee Member and Mr Micheal Deyegbe, the Catechists Reprepsentative.

The Tema Prebsytery was born out of one of the 2015 synod decisions to split the Accra Presbytery into two for more effective administration and supervision of growing districts and parishes in the Accra/Tema Metropolis.

The new presbytery is made up initially of 25 pastoral stations that consists of 34 congregations.

The various standing committees for the presbytery were also commissioned during the ceremony.
