DKM customers in Bolgatanga demonstrate over locked-up investments

The non-payment of investments to customers of the Bolgatanga branch of DKM Microfinance has triggered a massive demonstration in the area.

Clad in red and waving placards, the aggrieved customers have threatened not to partake in the 2016 general election if their monies are not paid them.

They chanted ‘no money, no votes’, ‘we want our money back’.

With branches in Sunyani, Bolgatanga and Wa and other places, DKM microfinance allegedly promised to double deposits of customers after some time.

Many Ghanaians in parts where the company had branches invested huge amounts of money.

Unfortunately, the operations of DKM microfinance were suspended May 11, 2015. This came after the Bank of Ghana (BoG) found the company culpable of operating outside the banking regulations.

Customers of the company have since been denied access to their initial deposits.

Some Government Officials and stakeholders met with some aggrieved customers in Sunyani after a series of demonstrations there.

Some of the customers who obtained court orders to liquidate properties of the company stormed the offices of the company in Wa, Damango and Sunyani and scrambled the assets.

The CEO of DKM Microfinance, Martin Delle was arrested by the Bureau of National Investigation but has been granted bail.

But the customers have accused government of putting in less effort to ensure they get their monies back from DKM.

They said government should have stopped the operation of DKM when it started operating and not after they had made their investments.

‘DKM is a recognized microfinance company’, ‘The suffering is too much’, ‘Pay us back our money’were some inscriptions on placards of the demonstrators at Bolgatanga.

They appealed to the Bank of Ghana to allow the company to operate to ensure they get their monies back.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister, Seth Terkper is expected to appear before parliament to brief the house on steps taken to restore peace and tranquility in towns where the troubled microfinance companies operated.
