FEB 9, 2016 LISTEN

Mr. Francis Gaisie, Sunyani Municipal Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has indicated that his outfit was having problems with the supply of two essential facilities, (Communication and Water) which were vital for its successful operations.

Mr. Gaisie was speaking to Suncity Radio on the difficulties his outfit was going through to fight the incessant fire outbreak in the Municipality.

He cited instances where its emergency telephone lines have been disconnected by Vodafone due to unpaid accumulated bills, making it difficult for victims to reach them on time for prompt action.

Another situation, according to Mr. Gaisie, which is making things difficult for Fire men is where the Ghana Water Company whose refusal to allow them (GNFS) to fetch water from their Abesim head works during emergencies, posed a worrisome situation in saving life and property in the municipality and even beyond.

The Fire Officer cited an instance where the GNFS had it extremely tough in responding to a recent fire out break at the Sunyani Area 2 Timber Market which let to loss of property.

Mr. Gaisie called on the authorities to quickly intervene to make the service more proactive and impactful, since1% of all water levies was mandatory to go the GNFS for its operations.

Commenting on the issue, Mr. Joseph Nkrumah, the Brong Ahafo Regional Manager of the Ghana Water Company, explained that there was no rift between his company and the Fire Service, The fact of the matter, he said was that the water level of the Tano River, the main source of water supply was running low, due to the severe harmattan conditions, so if care is not taken to ration water in the area, things could be severe water shortage in the Sunyani municipality and beyond.
