Lavender Hill To Be Closed In August – Mahama

From August this year, the infamous Lavender Hill, which has been a dump site for untreated human excreta into the sea, will be completely closed down according to President John Mahama.

The President made this announcement during a ceremony on Friday, February 5, to distribute some waste treatment machines and equipment.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has over years attempted to stop the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) from dumping untreated human excreta into the Korle Lagoon at Lavender Hill, a section of the Korle Gonno community.

Lavender Hill was the name given to the area due to the pungent smell that emanates from there.

The EPA has even taken legal action against the AMA to compel them to stop the dumping but to no avail.

President Mahama explained that the repair works on the Mudor Faecal Treatment Plant located at the Korle Lagoon, will be completed by August which permit the shut down of Lavender Hill.

President Mahama said, “I gave AMA and Zoomlion a deadline to repair the Mudor and put enough liquid waste capacity in order that we don’t put any more liquid waste into the sea. I am happy to announce that the deadline I gave them is August this year, and so from August this year, Lavender Hill is going to be closed down and there will be no more dumping of waste into the sea,” the President declared.

President Mahama also indicated that another liquid waste plant is also being built at Ajin Kotoku to cater for the northern and eastern parts of Accra.

He further urged Ghanaians to show more commitment to National Sanitation exercises and exhibit a spirit of voluntarism.
