Internet Fraudsters Nabbed At Korle-Bu

Two persons who have allegedly specialised in using the internet to defraud unsuspecting victims under the pretext of selling their vehicles through tonaton.com – an online marketing platform – have been apprehended.

The suspects are Ibrahim Iddrisu and Emmanuel Mensah.

They were arrested at the Korle-Bu Hospital after they attempted to escape with about GH¢13,500 belonging to a victim who had expressed interest in buying a Honda Civic car the suspects advertised online.

Police reports indicated that the suspects allegedly lured the victim to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital surgical block area, collected the money and wanted to escape but with the help of the health facility's security men, they were apprehended.

Narrating the story to DAILY GUIDE, ASP Effia Tengey, Accra Regional police spokeswoman, said on November 10, 2015 the complainant visited tonaton.com and saw an advertised Honda Civic 2006 model which was for sale with a contact number underneath it. He called the contact number to speak to the seller.

On November 11, 2015 the two parties agreed to meet at the Korle-Bu area with a mechanic to inspect the car before payment would be made.

On that fateful day, the complainant and his mechanic met the suspect with the car and after inspecting it, they settled on GH¢13,500 as the cost.

Suspect Ibrahim Iddrisu then lured the victim to one of the halls to collect the money while suspect Emmanuel sat in the car waiting.

The complainant also asked his mechanic to keep watch over the vehicle while he did the payment.

After paying the money, the complainant demanded for a receipt but Iddrisu asked him to wait so that he would go to the car and write the receipt.

Immediately Iddrisu entered the car, they sped off through the surgical ward gate.

The mechanic immediately informed the complainant who also alerted security personnel at post at the main gate of the hospital.

Sensing danger, the suspects abandoned the vehicle and jumped onto a waiting motorbike to escape but were apprehended and sent to the Korle-Bu police station.

Upon interrogation, they admitted collecting the money from the victim under the pretext of selling him the Honda Civic car.

The money will be used as exhibit to prosecute the suspects, police said.

The two are now in the custody of the Korle-Bu police.
