THREE SUSPECTED armed robbers have been arrested by the Akyem Anyinam police with one of them sustaining gunshot wounds on his left thigh.
The incident occurred Sunday afternoon when the highway robbers in broad day light, attacked passengers in a VIP bus on the Accra-Kumasi road.
It happened between Akyem Jejeti and Sekyere new toll booth, in the Atiwa District of the Eastern Region at about 4:50 pm.
The suspects are Abdul Razak, 28, Nigerian; Frederick Amponsah, 32, from New Tafo, a driver. They are in the custody of the Anyinam police assisting in investigations while Kwadwo Gyawu, 46, the injured suspect, has been referred to the Enyiresi Government Hospital for treatment under heavy security guard.
The Anyinam Police Commander, Supt. Jeffrey Darko, briefing DAILY GUIDE, said the suspects stormed the venue near the toll booth to stop vehicles plying the highway.
He said some police officers were dispatched to the scene but immediately they got there the robbers ran away.
According to the Anyinam police chief, the robbers monitored the movement of the law enforcers and so immediately they left the scene they (robbers) bounced back and started attacking passengers.
Supt. Darko posited that the robbers stopped one VIP bus coming heading towards Kumasi and robbed the passengers on board.
He added that a Tundra driver who is a security expert and was following the bus, pulled out his pistol when he saw the action of the suspected robbers and shot Kwadwo Gyawu, before the police got to the scene to arrest the other two.
Supt. Jeffrey Darko said the suspects were eight in number but when they got the hinted that the police were coming, five of them managed to board their vehicle and bolted.
The police seized one locally manufactured single barren gun, three mobile phones and one live cartridge from the robbers.
