Assembly members asked to attach seriousness to environmental sanitation

Amasaman, Oct. 8, GNA - Dr Henry Seidu Daanaa, Minister of Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs, has urged assemblies to attach eagerness to checking environmental sanitation to ensure the health of the citizenry.

'If we could apply the same enthusiasm to environmental sanitation as the Assembly has done to building of schools, health clinics, markets, feeder roads and the provision of water supply, electricity, among others, there and then we could be assured of our future,' he said.

Dr Daanaa gave the advice during the inauguration and swearing-in of the newly elected members of the Ga West Municipal Assembly on Tuesday.

He noted that adequate laws existed to deal with issues such as bush burning, illegal felling of timber, illegal mining activities, and environmental sanitation among others.

'However, where your Assembly has environmental problems which are not already covered by law, it is your duty to make appropriate bye-laws and ensure their enforcement.

'This is because it is your duty to supervise, monitor, coordinate and generally ensure that the right thing is done,' Dr Daana said.

Mr Sam Atukwei Quaye, the Ga West Municipal Chief Executive welcomed the newly elected Assembly members and urged them to contribute their quota to the aspiration of the people.

Nana Asibe Osei, the Amasaman District Magistrate Court Judge swore the Assembly members into four-year office, whilst advising them to continue to work hard for the people to acknowledge.

The Assembly was unable to elect a Presiding Member after two rounds of contesting. The two contestants namely; Mr Love Alister and Madam Beatrice Agbelenyo could not receive the mandatory 27 votes to qualify for the position.

Nana Oduro Numapau, the Amasaman District Electoral Officer who postponed the election, said he would meet with the Assembly members to fix a date for the election. GNA
