Tema, Oct. 4, GNA - Nana Kofi Bentum II, a traditional ruler and resident of Tema Newtown, has called on Ghanaians to form neighbourhood watchdog committees to help security agencies combat crime in their localities.

According to him, the Ghanaian sense of communality should be harnessed to protect life and property which are constitutionally guaranteed rights.

Nana Bentum II, who is also a businessman, told the Ghana News Agency that it is practically impossible for the Police to be everywhere but the law enforcement service needs the eyes and ears of the community to provide security.

He was commenting on a string of armed robbery attacks and two unresolved murders in Acheampong Village and Abonko, which are fringe communities in Tema NewTown.

So far, fear and anxiety have taken a better part of the residents of the sprawling part of the Tema Metropolis which is known for its energetic nightlife.

Residents now prefer an early slumber for fear of encountering the gangs of robbers who have terrorised the communities for the past week.

Meanwhile, Mr Isaac Ashai Odamtten, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, visited the area and assured residents that the security agencies are in control of the situation.

According to him, patrol by the Police and the Navy would be intensified while a permanent Police Post would be constructed to check crime.
