Elderly at Agona East registered for Eban card

Accra, Sept. 3, GNA - The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has registered and screened about 600 elder people at Akwakwaa in the Agona East District for the 'Eban' elderly welfare card.

The registration is to enable the aged to have access to fast consultations when they visit the hospitals, be attended to on time when they visit the banks and to have a reduced fare when they board any Metro Mass transport buses.

Nana Oye Lithur, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, in her speech when she inspected the registration process said the elderly have contributed in diverse ways for the development of the nation, hence the need to reward them at this retired stage to make life easy for them.

She said government would provide the district with Metro Mass buses which would ease their transportation challenges, adding that 600 elderly beneficiaries would at the end of the month start receiving their LEAP allowance.

She noted that the initiative is targeted at 25,000 people and would be implemented in all the 10 regions, saying 'I am happy to say that Agona East is the first to start with.'

The Minister stated that Government has put aside GHȼ25,000.00 for this project. We will also take on five more districts and the Western Regions to register the elderly on the Eban card welfare system,' she reiterated.

Maame Pokuah Sawyer, Agona East Member of Parliament thanked the government for ensuring that development thrives in the region.

She congratulated all candidates who won and those who did not win the district elections and urged them to join forces to develop the district.
