The Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students (GNUPS), an umbrella body of polytechnic students in the country, has honoured one of its former Women's Commissioners, Nancy Dery, for her outstanding contributions to the empowerment of Ghanaian women.

The ex-women's commissioner has also been recognised for her immense contribution to good leadership and governance in the country.

Ms Dery received a citation of honour at the 23rd Annual Delegates Congress of GNUPS, hosted by the Takoradi Polytechnic from 26th to 30th August, 2015.

The citation described her as the voice of women, campaigner of non-violence against women and a role model for young women in Ghana and Africa.

Nancy Dery, now with the Ghana Education Service in Wa, was the National Women's Commissioner for GNUPS between 2010 and 2011 and as part of her many initiatives and passion for women empowerment and growth, initiated the Annual Women's Conference of the Union to address issues pertaining to women's leadership and rights.

The citation presented to her read: 'Your campaign reflects the increasing recognition of violence against women across the country and efforts to get women into leadership and decision-making roles.

'As a women activist, an eloquent orator, your declaration of sentiments has been a revolutionary call for women’s rights across a variety of spectrums and has long been a thorn in the flesh of misogynists.'

The citation pointed out that 'You have become a high-profile figure in GNUPS in the uprising against violence against women and campaigner for women’s rights for many years…

'Your long history of activism and focus on womanly advancement in Ghana has swung you to the recognition by the Women’s Commission of the Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students.'

The citation further stated: 'In appreciation for your faithful and loyal service to womanhood, we are happy to present this token of our affection and gratitude on this occasion of our 23rd Annual Delegates Congress.

'Now, therefore, be it resolved that on behalf of the women constituents of the ten Polytechnics of Ghana, I take great pride and recognition in saluting you. Indeed, your dedication and commitment to end gender inequality and promote feminism are deserving of respect, admiration and commendation by the Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students.'

Meanwhile, in an interviewed with the press after receiving her award, Nancy Dery thanked GNUPS for the honour.

She indicated that the recognition would further enhance her activism for women's rights and empowerment.

She lamented that despite several efforts by activists, government and development partners to promote the rights of women, women across Ghana are still marginalised.

'Women empowerment is the only solution to poverty alleviation,' she noted, adding that women themselves must lead the way to their economic freedom.
