Hospitals Run Out Of Vaccines For Babies
04.08.2015 LISTEN

Investigations have revealed that majority of hospitals across the country have run out of required vaccines administered to new born babies against deadly childhood diseases.

Vaccines for measles, tuberculosis, yellow fever and hepatitis are all in short supply.

Starr News ' Esi Benewah Nyame reports that many newborn babies delivered within the past two weeks have not been vaccinated.

Investigations have also revealed that health officials at some health facilities are worried about the impact on these newborn babies.

One of the nurses at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, who spoke to Starr News on condition of anonymity, said without the drugs the babies stand a high risk of contracting any of the diseases.

'As I speak there is shortage, we don't have any back up at Korle Bu. We have directed mothers to nearby clinic and hospitals but we have been told that they also don't have it.

'[The vaccine] protects the babies…and the new born babies have low immune system so if they are exposed to these diseases they can easily get it'.
