Central region would Saturday, 1st August, host the 9th edition of the National Sanitation Day clean up exercise to get rid of all kinds of filth in the region.

In view of this, the local government and rural develoment minister, Alhaji Collins Dauda has presented 10,000 litter bins to the Central Regional Coordinating Council for onward distribution to the various MMDAs.

Other items presented by the minister included brooms shovels and wheelbarrows to help the 19 Assemblies in the region to organise a successful event.

Shortly after the presentation, Mr. Dauda held a closed door meeting with all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives in the region.

Also in attendance were heads of the various departments at the RCC as well as other major stakeholders in sanitation.

Speaking to the press later, Mr. Dauda appealed to the media in the region to fully participate and collaborate with the Local Govt. ministry to organise the exercise.

He expressed outermost weary over the recent report that suggested Ghana was the 7th dirtiest country in the world.

He therefore charged the media to give priority to the exercise and sensitise the citizenry on the need to cultivate good sanitation practises.

Mr Collins Dauda was accompanied by his two deputies, Mr Nii Lantey Vanderpuye and Mr Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum. Also with him were some officials from his ministry.

The Local Government and Rural Development Ministry introduced the National Sanitation Day in November 2014.

The purpose was to clean every corner of Ghana in order to get rid of any form of filth in the country.

The day is observed on the first Saturday of every month.

Since the inception of the programme, the clean-up exercise has massively taken place in eight out of the ten regions in Ghana.

It is believed to have rekindled the spirit of many Ghanaians as far keeping the environment clean and good sanitary practises are concerned.
