L/Cpl. Emmanuel Bartels
Defilement remains an unbeatable nightmare of parents. When it happens as it often does these days, they and the victims get confused and even traumatised.

When Mr. Mawunyegah Quashie discovered his    12-year-old daughter exhibited symptoms of pregnancy as carried in one of our front page stories yesterday, he could not believe his eyes. When it was established beyond doubts that she had been impregnated, he became one of the many to suffer the uncontrollable libido of irresponsible men.

L/Cpl. Emmanuel Bartels, a policeman, is alleged to be responsible for the offence. He is certainly not a good ambassador of the law enforcement agency, being the latest to drag the name of the institution in the mud, should it be established that he is responsible for the pregnancy of the JHS teenager.

So far though, it is difficult not to be convinced by the direction of the finger of the pregnant girl's father.

Just what drives some men to lose their heads and get entangled in such sexual mess is beyond comprehension. In the case of Emmanuel, he is a married man and could not have complained of being sex starved. Even if that is the case, should he vent his lust on a helpless teenager whose only crime was that she went on errands for him when his wife was not at home?

It is painful to suffer this predicament after spending so much time and money to bring up kids to this level only for an irresponsible person to put her in such a plight.

The Inspector General of Police and his team at the Police Headquarters, we can bet, are not going to leave any stone unturned as far as investigation into this case is concerned.

We can only pity them when we view their efforts at ridding the law enforcement agency of bad nuts as such occasional misconducts pop up.  The agency, being part of society, cannot claim to be peopled by angels. The bad nuts within would occasionally have their cups filled and accordingly showed the exit.

It is our prayer that investigation into the case is expedited so that justice is served accordingly and the public notified so that the deterrent effect is established.

The law enforcement agency is one institution where such unacceptable conduct should be dealt with as quickly as possible, given the fallouts from the negative impressions that they can trigger.

Parents too should be mindful about how their daughters or the girl-child under their roofs interact with neighbours or co-tenants. Gone are the days when adults could call their neighbours' kids their wives with a touch of humour and even allow them in their rooms.

Not anymore as every girl is vulnerable and parents should not allow them to be sent on errands by non-family members, especially when such senders expect them to turn up in their rooms. Today's world is so corrupted that to regard it as it used to be decades ago would be a dangerous blunder.

The cases of defilement are just too many that we are tempted to wonder whether there are men walking in the streets seeking feminine preys to pounce upon.
