JUL 23, 2015 LISTEN

Some irate youth of Bogoso, a mining community in the Western Region on Monday blocked the main Tarkwa-Bogoso road which is under construction, rendering hundreds of commuters stranded.

The youth used table, benches and the trunks of coconut trees to block the road at the market round-about and 'B' line area in Bogoso to express their dissatisfaction at the manner in which the road was being constructed.

According to the youth, the road was very narrow and that it was not good for a mining town like Bogoso.

It took the intervention of the chief of Bogoso, Nana Kwesi Sompreh and the police to calm the youth down and remove the blockades.

The chief told the angry youth that the DCE for the area Robert Wisdom Cudjoe was not around and added that he would soon convene a meeting with the DCE and the youth to try to resolve the alleged road problem.

Meanwhile, the Western Regional Minister, Paul Evans Aidoo has admitted that roads in the region were generally in deplorable states.

He mentioned that apart from the few trunk roads that were fairly good, most of the roads in the region were feeder roads.

'These feeder roads deteriorate very easily during the heavy rainy season year after year. This situation affects easy evacuation of cocoa and other food crops from the villages to the marketing centres', he stressed.

He stated 'besides, there are also no good interconnecting roads between the Western Region and her neighbouring regions such as Brong Ahafo and Ashanti. This also makes interregional trade rather difficult'.
