Residents of Alabar in Kumasi are shattered by the gruesome murder of a man who calls Muslims to prayer in the community after suspected armed robbers gunned him down close by a Mosque.

Neighbors say they heard 65-year-old Saeed Kadir screaming at his assailants that he had nothing in a sack he was carrying before they shot him in the head at dawn on Saturday.

Residents say the callous incident of the muezzin was perpetrated by suspected robbers who mistook a radio set and a copy of the Holy Quran in the man’s sack for money.

The incident has incensed some youth who have vowed to rid the area of drug peddlers who have over the years been a security threat to residents and traders.

Luv FM’s Erastus Asare Donkor reports drug peddlers at a notorious narcotic hub known as Tinka Island, located few metres from where the man was shot, have been selling drugs with impunity.

Erastus reports that one year after a combined team of police and neighborhood watch volunteers mounted an operation to clear Alabar of the illicit drug business, the perpetrators are back in full swing.

The murder of Saeed Kadir, reports suggest, is the third shooting incident in the area in the last two weeks, and residents strongly link the criminal acts to the resurgence of the illicit drug trade.

On Sunday about 50 youth laid siege and destroyed temporary structures erected by narcotic dealers.
