Education Break WAEC's examination monopoly, Graduate Teachers charge
JUN 18, 2015 LISTEN

National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) is demanding the dismantling of West Africa Examinations Council's monopoly over exams administration in Ghana.

The demand follows massive leakages in the ongoing BECE which is thought to be the most pervasive in the country's history.

The graduate teachers say they cannot understand why Ghanaian students must be limited to taking exams certified by only WAEC.

Five papers in the ongoing BECE exams have been cancelled and two others postponed after papers popped up on social media in shocking detail.

Leading the charge is vice president of NAGRAT Mr. Angel Carbonu. He said Ghana is one of few countries where only one body organizes exams.

The integrity of WAEC once bankable since it was established in 1952 has all but vanished, the leadership of the teachers laid bare their conviction at a press conference Thursday.

Acting Director General of the Ghana Educations Service, Stephen Adu did not share the view of WAEC's battered credibility.

The examination administration has “some credibility ” he admitted, acknowledging the latest leakage is unprecedented.

But he urged the teachers and Ghanaians to wait for the BNI investigations to be concluded before taking a position on the contemporary value of WEAC in Ghana’s education system.

The investigation could help identify the source of the leakage, he said.

He suggested that if it is found to have occurred in highly placed sources in the examination administration system, the teachers view could be justified.
