Weeding punishment turns tragic; SHS student dies from cutlass wound

A punishment to weed turned tragic when a student of Effiduase Senior High School, Ebenezer Kusi, accidentally inflicted cutlass wounds on himself leading to his death.

School authorities explained to LUV FM’s Erastus Asare Donkor that a group of students were assigned to weed the school compound for various offences.

While engaged in the morning punishment, a squirrel darted off from the bush attracting the attention of the students under punishment.

They spontaneously gave the quick-footed rodent a chase to kill or catch. Tragedy was lurking around.

Ebenezer, believing he had closed in on the target, swung his cutlass but missed the squirrel.

The cutlass however caught him in the thigh, sinking a mortal wound on the 18-year old second-year student.

The chase came to a screeching halt as his stunned colleagues rushed to their frightened colleague, blood spluttering on the grass.

They rushed him to the local Government hospital where their worst fears were confirmed; Ebenezer was confirmed dead.

There is total grief at the Effiduase Senior High School in the Ashanti Region after the incident.

A distraught 50-year old father of the deceased is at a loss as to why his son was subjected to weeding as punishment.

He believes the student’s term bill caters for keeping the school's grass properly trimmed. He is also disputing the claim that his son was late for school, saying the boy left home after 6:30am.

He blamed the son's death on the school authorities.
