Ho, May 2, GNA - May Day in the Volta Region was marked on Friday with a route march by workers through the principal streets and durbar at the Jubilee Park in Ho.

The scores of workers resplendent in branded T-Shirts of their unions carried placards some of which read: IMF Bailout, Blessing or Curse; "No money to Run Offices," and "Protect and Preserve Public Property."

The theme for the Day, was 'Addressing the Energy Crises: The Role of Organised Labour'.

Mr Elvis Van-Lare, the Volta Regional Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), read the Secretary General's speech, while Madam Helen Ntoso, the Volta Regional Minister, read the President's message.

Mr Van-Lare paid tribute to workers who fought for workers' rights, especially those whose fortitude years ago resulted in the institution of humane working hours for workers.

He expressed regrets that conditions of workers were not getting any better in Ghana with many leaving on loans and that the inadequate energy supply was worsening the situation.

Madam Ntoso said government had comprehensive plans running to tackle the energy crises.

Guinness Ghana Limited mounted a stand where workers could take some Guinness and the new malt brand; Top Malt, for free. A 20 minute borborbor drumming session also entertained dignitaries.
