Pusiga (U/E), April 30, GNA - Alhaji Collins Dauda, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, has urged traditional rulers to sustain the National Sanitation Day (NSD) programme, instituted by the government to promote environmental cleanliness.

He said the introduction of the exercise is appropriate and requires active support from chiefs and opinion leaders to sustain it.

Alhaji Dauda gave the advice when he addressed the chiefs and people of Pusiga and Garu in the Upper East Region.

He observed that when chiefs actively engage and contribute meaningfully to nation building, it motivate the people to also play their part.

He advised Ghanaians to promote personal hygiene, revisit and re-kindle the spirit of communal labour and voluntarism to promote good sanitation and health.

Alhaji Dauda also inspected some on-going and completed development projects in the two districts and advised the staff of the assemblies to act as agents of change.

Naba Kuut Ayuwma Apaka, Pusiga Naba, promised the readiness of his community to support the NSD exercise to get rid of filth and promote hygiene.

He listed on-going projects in the district such as ICT centre/library, maternity block at Pusiga Health Centre, construction of a quarantine station at Gareke and school infrastructure.

He also informed the minister of a land the traditional council has released for the construction of a District Assembly Office and reminded him of the bad road network in the area.

Mr Alhassan Abugbilla, District Chief Executive, said the assembly regards education as key to the development of the district, and had spent much resources in the provision of educational infrastructure and other programmes.

He said government in partnership with the United Nations Children's Education Fund, had initiated a Community-Led Sanitation Project to sensitise communities about the ill-effects of open defecation.
