General News Soldier Kills Civilian
APR 27, 2015 LISTEN

The 36-year-old carpenter, James Jabik, who was shot and killed by armed military men in Bunkpurugu in the Northern Region for breaking curfew, was on Sunday buried with heavy security presence after a post-mortem was conducted on the body at the Baptist Medical Centre (BMC).

His death is reported to have sparked yet another round of tension in the area as residents threatened a face-off with the military whom they had accused of terrorising civilians in the area.

The pathologist's report indicates that the deceased died from severe bleeding after he was shot at close range from behind his right thigh which broke the thigh bone.

Contrary to claims by the military high command that the deceased was armed with a machete and tried taking a weapon from one of the military men, preliminary investigations and pictures available to DAILY GUIDE revealed a contrary situation.

Deep throat sources revealed he was shot from the window while hiding between two sacks of maize and was left to bleed to death as no one came to his rescue.

Report suggests Private Daniel Appiah of the 6 Battalion, Kamina Barracks in Tamale, has been arrested by the Military Police over the death of the man in Bunkprugu.

Jabik was allegedly shot dead on Friday by Private Appiah, with service number NP 202427.

He was reportedly shot dead in his room during curfew hours, the deceased wife, Binantoi Jabik, has said.

According to her, the suspect allegedly instructed her to drag the remains of the deceased to the compound.

Brother to the deceased, Dickson Labik, is demanding justice for the death of James Jabik, accusing the military of acting in an unprofessional way. He has called on the police to thoroughly investigate the matter and bring the erring soldiers to book.

Giving a chronology of events leading to the death of his brother, Labik disclosed that the armed military men surrounded the house in which the deceased was living after he was accused of breaking the curfew which was imposed two weeks ago following violent clashes.

According to him, residents, including the deceased, went hiding in their rooms when they noticed they had been surrounded by the armed military personnel who demanded they came out of their rooms.

“All of us went into hiding in our various rooms. His wife and children were in the room. When they came they entered and pulled the woman and children out and saw the man hiding in between some sacks of maize. They pointed a gun at him through the window and shot him,” brother of the deceased disclosed.

When Jabik was taken to the hospital after the curfew hours, he was pronounced dead on arrival, but the military high command claimed the deceased was shot during a struggle with the soldiers.

The Director of Public Affairs at the Ghana Armed Forces, Lt Colonel Aggrey Quarshie, on Accra-based Joy Fm, said the military went to the house to arrest him for breaking the curfew but Jabik armed himself with a machete and threatened to kill the military men.

Bunkprugu MP's Assurance
The Bunkprugu Member of Parliament (MP), Solomon Boa, assured the bereaved family of using the appropriate means to seek justice.

'We will make the necessary noise until justice is meted out. Before I came here, I had an interaction with the police commander and he didn't know what to tell me; he just told me that it was something that they could not just understand. They are not denying the fact that whatever has happened is beyond their comprehension,' Mr Solomon Boa underscored.

'This is inhumane; this is cruel; this is bizarre and this is something that we cannot allow to happen under this our democratic dispensation.

'Curfew doesn't necessarily mean that you should go around and when you hear people talking in their rooms you enter and start molesting them and asking them for money; that is the allegation everywhere which has gotten to this level,' Mr Boa fumed.
