APR 27, 2015 LISTEN

There was a tragedy at Mayera near Sampa in the Jaman North District of the Brong-Ahafo Region Saturday morning as a suspected mentally derailed man went berserk killing three persons, including his biological 75-year-old father, Nana Yaw Sekyere, and injuring two others.

Feka Kwabena Martins, 35, the suspect who also died in the attack, was reportedly discharged from the Sampa Government Hospital Friday evening, and was supposed to have been taken to the psychiatric clinic at the Sunyani Regional Hospital for further treatment, but was rather taken home by his family members.

However, in the early hours of Saturday, Kwabena Martins allegedly pulled a locally manufactured gun, started firing indiscriminately without any provocation and ended up shooting five family members, killing three.

The other two deceased persons were Madam Afua Fofie, 51 and Thomas Yaw Appiah, 67.

Their bodies have been deposited at the Sampa Government Hospital.

The survivors, Margaret Kwayie, 50 and Asuming Sekyere, 60, (a retired staff of Ghana Education Service) are said to be in critical conditions and have since been transferred to the Regional Hospital in Sunyani for medical attention.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) William Gyamfi, Sampa District Police Commander, who confirmed the horrific incident to DAILY GUIDE, said the police received an SOS call Saturday around 7:30 am that the Mayera community, which is about 10km from Sampa, was on fire as Martins was on rampage.

According to DSP Gyamfi, when the police rushed to the scene, they found three dead persons in pools of blood with gunshot wounds, with two others seriously wounded. The police later found the suspect also dead with head injury.

The commander indicated that the police gathered that the suspect reportedly run out of bullets during the indiscrimate shooting and attempted running away but fell on a rock thereby injuring his head. He also said another report indicated that the suspect was lynched by the people after committing the evil act.

DSP Gyamfi told the paper that preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased suspect had a mental problem and was discharged a day before that fateful day on referral from the Sampa Government Hospital to the Sunyani Regional Hospital but the family sent him home for reasons yet to be known.

He said intensive investigations had since begun to establish if there was a remote cause for the terrible incident.
