Special Report An Epileptic Mother Of Triplet Cries For Support As Kids Suffer Extreme Malnutrition
APR 26, 2015 LISTEN

Early years of childhood form the basis of intelligence, personality, social behavior, and capacity to learn and nurture oneself as an adult. Many children in the northern part of Ghana do not reach their full human potential because of their families' low income status, disability, tribal conflict among other factors.

Fuseini Sulemana, Alhassan Sulemana and Safura Sulemana, a triplet in Nyankpala in the Tolon District, are going through trying moments as a result of their mother's medical condition and the family's low income status. Their mother, Memunatu is suffering from severe epilepsy. Epilepsy is a disorder of the brain that causes recurring seizures. During such seizures Memunatu Seidu would sometimes fall on or fall with any of the kids in her custody at that moment causing injuries to that baby. The kids are not spared the stigma attached to their mother's medical condition, and the mere fact that they are a triplet. They are regarded evil kids.

The triplet, who were born on 11th November 2013, still looks like five months old babies due to extreme malnutrition. They can't even stand on their feet let alone, to walk. They look very pale, weak and helpless. Fuseini, Alhassan and Safura, would always prefer to be with their father than their mother. Given the medical condition of the wife, the father of the triplet, Sulemana Mumuni, most often has to assume the duties of his wife. This has greatly affected the income level of the family. The family now depends on people's benevolence as Memuna defies the stigma and sends the triplet out to beg for petty alms because the family's income is woefully inadequate to survive on.

Rev. Job Mumuni Wahab, the head pastor of All Souls Assembly in Nyankpala tells me how the church in its own little way, has been supporting Memunatu Seidu and her family. According to him, the church for some time now has been given some amou nt of money to Memunatu and her triplet each week they visited the church. He said the church later contributed to buy some clothes for the children and wrappers for herself.

Children are special gifts from God not only to the biological parents but the society as a whole. Society therefore owes it a duty to create the enabling environment for the growth and development of children. The future of this triplet, Fuseini, Alhassan and Safura Sulemana, hangs in the balance as they lack the necessary conditions to enable them reach their full human potentials.
