Armed Men Disrupt Kasoa Landlords Meeting
13.04.2015 LISTEN

Armed men last Friday disrupted a press conference organised by the Landlords Association of Kasoa “Iron City” in the Central Region. The meeting, which was to discuss land dispute issues in the area, saw armed men who destroyed property, including a 50-metre stretch tent occupied by invited pressmen and residents.

Numbering about 10, the armed men, who arrived a few minutes after the opening prayer, also dismantled the wires connected to the public address system.

In an attempt to stop the armed men from causing injury to invited guests and protect the equipment from being damaged, the organisers of the conference and some members of the Central Mechanics and Spare Parts Dealers Association (CEMSDA) retaliated.

That led to one of the armed men sustaining machete wounds. Others too sustained minor injuries.

It took the timely intervention of police personnel from the Kasoa District Police Command to stop what could have been a messy encounter between the two groups.

The police, who arrived shortly after the fight had broken out, managed to separate the two groups who had both relayed information for back-up. So far, no arrest has been made.

The press conference was, however, called off to avoid any further encounters.

Land disputes
A statement signed by the Chairman of Kasoa Iron City Landlords Association, Mr Kweku Obeng Mensah, said residents of the town, over the past two months, had been constantly terrorised by a group of armed men from Ngleshie Amanfro

According to the statement, the group claimed the land the residents of Iron City dwelt on belonged to the Ga Stool and, therefore, they should vacate the place or pay the rent due them.

“The parcel of land in question was originally owned by the Nai Odupon Awoshi Tetteh of the Odupon Kpehe Family and was granted to the government for state farm and irrigation project II. The land has been legitimately acquired by CEMSDA from the government with document duly registered at the Lands Commission,” it said.

The statement accused the Ga South Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Jerry A Thompson, and the Chief of Ngleshie Amanfro, Nii Quarshie Gborlor, of being the brains behind the attacks on them.
